 FAQ's

Q – What are your dates of operation?

A – We are open from May 15th thru December 1st. We do shut our water off to spigots around October 1st, but the shower building remains partially open until December 1st for hunters and die-hard campers.

Q – How many tents/campers may we put on a site?

A – The nightly rate is for ONE STRUCTURE per site. We allow more than one ONLY if it is a small tent for your children (17 & under) or if you have paid for an additional site.

Q – What is the best time to make reservations?

A – As soon as possible! Especially if you’d like a specific site or group of sites; or would like to use the livery on a Saturday in late June, July or August.

Q – When is check-out time for camping?

A – Check-out time is at Noon. If you want to stay past noon, please inquire at the desk whether the site you are on is reserved, if it isn't you may stay as late as sunset.

Q – Can I use my own watercraft?

A – Yes. If you’d like us to transport you and it upstream so you can float back to your car or campsite the charge is a little more than half the cost of our regularly scheduled trips. Transports should still be reserved & must be registered and paid for at least a half hour in advance of the scheduled trip time.

If you are camping with us and are transporting your own equipment, there is no fee to use our landing.

If you are not camping with us – there is a landing fee charged for each watercraft ($2 per person) that puts-in or takes-out at our campground.

Q – When do livery trips go out?

A – Trips leave the campground (we pick you up as close to your site as possible) at 9:00, 10:30, 12:00, 1:30, 3:00 and 4:00. If you want to take one of the trips, you must be registered and paid for at least a half hour in advance of the trip leaving time.

Q – Do we need to bring our own life jackets?

A – RCC provides each kayaker and canoer with a seat cushion and a life-vest. We have life jackets available for tubers who wish to use them. You may bring your own, especially if it’s custom-fitting.

Q – Is there an alcohol limit?

A – No. Alcohol is permitted in the campground, but ONLY at your campsite. You may not bring it ANYWHERE else. And simply because alcohol is allowed does not give anyone free reign to be rude & obnoxious. Lewd or lascivious behavior, profanity or just plain nasty language will be grounds to ask you to leave. Our goal is for everyone to enjoy themselves – common courtesy is required.

Also remember – It is unlawful to operate a watercraft while intoxicated. The Muskegon is patrolled by state & county water safety officers.

Q - Who Can Go?

A - While any activity involving water can be dangerous, the Muskegon is a river well-suited for people of all ages. Anyone can go!  Our longer canoe trips (4-6 hours or more) do have a 300 ft portage (where you have to carry your canoe), it is recommended that people who are very young, very old, or who have ill health do not take those trips.

Q - What Should We Bring?

A -   Being on the river usually means lots of sun!! Bring plenty of sun-block for everyone and fresh water to drink. Hats and sunglasses are always a good choice. If you forget to pack them, come on up to the camp-store, we have those and lots of other convenience items on hand. Snacks are a good idea – pack them in Ziploc bags to keep them from getting wet. Also make sure to waterproof your cameras, lighters and other things that melt when they fall into the water. It is recommended that everyone wear some type of water shoes when going on the river. We have a nice, clean river, but there are still sharp stones & sticks that may cut your feet. Other items to consider are eye-glass straps, water-toys and if it’s chilly an extra set of dry clothes that are securely waterproofed. A little twine is good to tie some of these items to your watercraft.

Q - What is the land like along the river?

A-  We ask that you always keep in mind that landowners along the river are entitled to their privacy. Don’t trespass. There are lots of places on state land that it’s okay to stop on. If it’s questionable – please don’t.

Q - What about liability?

A -  Everyone must sign a waiver of liability form before they are allowed to go on any of our livery trips. As always, all activities are done at your own risk.

This list is not meant to be inclusive, only a guide. You should always use common sense and good judgment.
